Alternative is a really, really broad category, and depends on the person when classified.
but Beck is usually considered alternative. He's one of the most eclectic musicians alive. He dabbles in everything from electronic rock to acoustic to good old fashioned rock.
Radiohead... they're mostly electronic since their third album, "OK Computer," which is hailed as one of the best albums of all time by a lot of people. But if you aren't into the electronic scene (not dance electronica, at all), go for "The Bends."
MOdest Mouse is a sort of love-it-or-hate-it alternative group, but I'm on the love side, so i have to recommend them. I can't even describe their sound adequately...
Badly Drawn Boy, the Smashing Pumpkins, the Flaming Lips...
As far as individual songs, for Beck, try "Loser," "Sex Laws," "Where It's At," or my personal favorite, "Lost Cause."
For Radiohead, their most popular song was "Creep," but I'd suggest trying "Paranoid Android," or "Just."
For Modest Mouse, their biggest hits were "Float On" and "The Ocean Breathes Salty." You'd have to buy an album or download the songs to get anything else, but if you have that capability, I suggest anything from "Lonesome Crowded West."
The Smashing Pumpkins have been around since the 90s, and have put out some real gems, like "1979," "Zero," "Tonight, Tonight," and "Mayonaise." But their sound resisted grunge completely, and created something better and more resounding, more rockin.
The Shins! I forgot the Shins. Who doesn;t like the Shins? Communists, that's who. For the Shins, try "Caring is Creepy," "New Slang," both of which were featured on the "Garden State" soundtrack. Those are not their best songs, but they are fantastic. The Shins are a mixture of a dash of folk and a lovin-spoonful of rock, with incredible lyrics that anyone can relate to, and sing along with.
Happy listening, hope this helps.

What I do when I want to hear new songs, is go to Amazon.com look up an Artist you really like already then look at the "Customers who bought this item also bought " section and that will give you some different groups, usually with the same style. Best thing is you can sample each song on the album.
