Not so fast. There is one part of this equation that is not being considered: Scott Boras.
Boras is the hard-*** agent for both Zito and Matsuzaka and is probably intentionally "breaking down" the trade negotiations to make the Red Sox feel a little panicky. The Sox, with their initial investment in Matsuzaka, have made it clear that he is the guy that they are going to eventually sign; they are just playing chicken with Boras until one side gives. The money, not just the initial bid, but also the signing money, is probably already set aside for Matsuzaka’s contract. Boras is bluffing the breakdown to see what more the Sox are willing to throw onto the negotiations table, and eventually Matsuzaka will sign with the Red Sox.
The Sox, however, would not be wise to pursue Zito at the same time, or in the time being, because Boras would know why, and that would just drive the price for both players up. Zito will continue to wait for all the rest of the left handed pitching to be gobbled up at $10, 12, 15 million a year and then cap the free agency season off with the biggest contract… and that contract will probably not come from the Sox.

Well.... I just don't know, for starters, Matsuzaka is a rightie, Zito is a leftie, do the BoSox need another leftie? It's more than just filling positions, it's filling needs as well. But, all else said, Matsuzaka, is going to set the precedence for this years future signings in the way of money. He signs high, Zito won't go low, he doesn't sign at all, Zito may lose milions too

No, Zito is a fly ball pitcher. If he goes to Boston, he wont be great and if he goes to the Yankees he'll be destroyed. As for Matsuzaka, the Red Sox have not and do not have to spend a dime on this guy. The 51 million dollars dissappears if Matsuzaka does not sign and neither him nor the Seibu Lions get anything. Theo is a major league GM, he's not going to sign an untested player for 15 million a year. Also the Red Sox are going to try to switch Papelbon over to the rotation which gives: Wakefield, Shilling, Beckett, Papelbon and a fifth starter (possibly a farm system player, a player traded for Manny or Taverez who did well out of the rotation).

Yeah, his agent, Boras, wanted too much money for him. It looks like Matsuzaka will return to Japan for one more year. At the end of the 07 season, he'll be a free agent and can sign anywhere without any worries.
As for Zito, I am not so sure. He is shopping around. I am sure the Sox are interested, but so are the Yankees, the Rangers and many other teams. We'll see what happens.

Good call on Daisuke not getting signed. You really hit the nail on the head. Next time, wait until you are actually right to start bragging about your baseball knowledge. Or lack there of in this case.
Scott Boras always tries to play hardball. Anyone that follows major league baseball should have known the rumors that the deal was "dead" were nothing but Boras trying to get bargaining leverage.

I refuse to believe that the Red Sox did all this to block the Yankees from getting him. I think on the Last day they will come to an agreement with Matsuzaka. And if they dont, they'll probably go hard after Zito, and They'll get their posting fee of 51million back and Matsuzaka will go back to Japan and they wont haveta worry about him with the yankees for a year.. and it will be the Yankees he pitches for next season, you can bet yer last buck on that. To go thru all of this and not sign the guy... it just seems stupid... they should just pay the guy and be done with it.. they got into this situation, and they should close it out now.
And would the Red sox fans stop with the "Dice-K" crap, it sounds really LAME ... and im betting he wouldnt respond to it.

For the last answer...since when has Clemens signed with the yankees. He's only gonna sign with the rangers or astros (close to home), and more likely he'll sign with the astros because the NL is better for pitchers. And, they still have a few days left. Generally deals like this come down to the wire. I feel it is good whether or not we sign him, and ZITO IS OVERRATED. He did win a Cy Young, but I bet I can pull up 20 other pitchers who won one and were just "OK" for their career.

They still have time to sign Matsuzaka. If he doesn't sign, I still doubt they sign Zito.

When did you tell me that?
I thought you told me that he still had until the 14th to negotiate with the Red Sux. Zito is not a slam dunk either but he'll command the same amout of dollars minus the "Signing fee".

I guarantee you that the red sox will not go after Barry Zito. In my opinion he is overrated and look at his era. According to ESPN the Magazine, Barry Zito is due for a bad era next year. I personally think the red soz should find a closer, strengthen their bullpen, and find a good hitter. Look at the Red Sox starting rotation: Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett,Johnathan Papelbon,Tim Wakefield, Jon Lester. What else do they need?
