I thought I saw something drop onto her arm and said "I think you dropped something." She looked down, said "Oh, it's my gum," picked it off her arm and put it back in her mouth. My wife was appalled; I thought it was no big deal. How would you react?

I would have laughed about it.
Don't sweat the small stuff.

If the waitress had admitted that she forgot to get rid of the gum before she started working, or if she would have apologized to us I wouldn't have made a big deal, but because of her careless attitude I would have asked to speak with the manager on duty. Health codes all across the country prohibit food service employees to chew gum while working because they can spit saliva onto their customer's meals which is a major health violation.

Her arm, her gum, no big deal. Of course, you could argue the wisdom in allowing your waitstaff to chew gum on the job in the first place, but if it wasn't a fancy restaurant I can't see any reason to be upset.

I dont think it is either, but it does seem though that women do think differently about that stuff. Personally I think we are an over sanitized society. Did you know that too much disinfecting and sanitizing can cause a "super bug' look it up. Its kinda like the flu, it grows immune and mutates every year so that it can accomplish its main objective... to find a nice warm place to live.

well, it's probably not too professional to be chewing gum if you have contact with customers... But nevertheless, as long as it did not drop on my plate or something, I would not make a big deal out of it.

Chewing gum while waiting tables is rude and completely wrong. I'd have left...who knows if she might have dropped it in your food next time at the table...

Should have been fired. Another thing that grosses me out is when the waitress has really long, painted fingernails. Yuck!
