My boyfriend doesn't understand deaf culture. I am hard of hearing but i dont let many people know because many don't understand. I went to a Deaf Christmas Party Saturday and i have 2 more to go to next Saturday. He laughs at the fact that I went to a deaf party. I tried to tell him I'm hard of hearing and he simply said "I'm talking to you on a telephone right now." Well yes he was but i had the volume all the way up and could still barely hear him. He says i'm using it as an excuse to justify being at a deaf party without looking stupid.

I have a similar problem. I lost a part of my hearing not long ago. I'm not deaf, but when people talk to me I only hear some of the sounds, so it's hard for me to understand them and communication becomes very hard when there are background sounds, because then I don't even hear clearly the types of sounds that I can still hear. But because I'm not completely deaf people have a hard time understanding and believing that I really can't hear them well when they talk to me, so they're not exactly helpful or understanding and willing to speak up, look at me or repeat words I don't catch.

Maybe you can show your boyfriend the results of a hearing test you've had or explain to him that you just don't hear well even though you're not completely deaf either. You could provide some short reading material about the kind of hearing loss you have and ask him to read it. If he still doesn't believe you, then maybe you need to ask yourself if this a relationship you want to keep going. I personally wouldn't want to spend my life with someone who thinks I'm lying about something like that.

Apart from that, if somebody likes deaf culture and has some deaf friends they want to have fun with, I see nothing wrong with going to deaf parties, regardless of whether the person can hear or not. It doesn't look stupid at all if you ask me.
