I have to move out on my own. I don't know anyone that needs a roommate, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about this. It would be really hard for me to afford living somewhere alone. Do you think its safe to find random roommates on places like craigslist? If so, what should I avoid or look for? Any suggestions/words of encouragment are appreciated. I'm sort of in a tight situation and didn't expect to have to move so soon.

craigslist can be a great way to find a roommate, i would also choose a roommate of the same sex. Meet them, talk to them, go out for lunch/dinner to see how they are. discuss the way youeach like to live. good luck

I think it's best to get someone of the same sex to be on the safe side. Try to meet them and have a long conversation to learn more about them. Think of qualities you want or hate in a roommate (noise levels, smoker or non-smoker etc). Try posting some ads in places where you feel comfortable or in a small paper. If you have an iffy feeling about someone, don't live with them! I lived in a bachelor apartment and it can be affordable if you decide not to go the roommate rout. Good luck!

where I live there is a place called homeshare. They ask you questions and they hook you up with people. Some have a home and some are looking for a home. Some have rooms for rent. They find out your needs and they search you out a good place to be. Many people do it. Works pretty well from what I've heard. They even have it to where if you can only pay so much then you work with the other person. Maybe you can grocery shop and do laundry in return for rent. Things like that.
