I've been doing goofy shifts beginning any time from 6am to midnight on any given day (often switching between the two in the same week, some of them going 10-12 hours, and without two days off in a row) for my entire working life, and a lot of the people I know have been in the same boat. What happened to people having managable 8 hour days, with week-ends and the opportunity to sleep at the same end of the day every day? Wasn't there a time when crap like this was illegal or immoral or something? Aaaargh!

I understand as I have been there too. As for your question, employers tend to take a lot of leeway, and will push only as hard as they figure they can get by with. Blue collar jobs, and many lower pay so called white collar jobs tend to be the most abusive, and add to this a general lack of any real benefits and its no wonder why most dream of a day they can work for theirselves.

Also depends on your work, for example, Military have no set hours so to speak. Best thing is to think of a day you will change careers and make your own rules for a change. Don't give up.

For a five year period I worked 18 hours a day six days a week, now I can work from 4 - 16 hours a day and don't know how long I'll be there til I get off.

People used to work 8 hours a day but it was usually shift work. 7-3, 3-11, 11-7
