I'm what might be called a multi-shift worker with an air of indifference.
I do very little work (mostly odd jobs) and I do them only whenever I'm in the mood for work. If I take naps during the day, I find myself doing things at night.
Right now, it's a little after midnight, and I'm answering questions (blessing people with my personal opinions). It's fun, but doesn't pay much. Well, sometimes I earn 10 points, which is nice, but doesn't buy much.
The only disadvantage I can think of based on what I've heard over the years is that many people claim that shift work tends to mess up their internal clock. Their body has a hard time keeping track of when it's time to go to sleep or wake up. Also, some feel inferior; that is, get the impression that working during the days is for people who are better than them. I remember a police officer talking about that sometime ago. He was pointing out that detectives have daytime hours. So, some of these people appear to look on night shifts as a negative.
Others think it's a blessing or a positive. My daughter (a registered nurse) loves it. Lets her be at home with the kids during the day. She also likes working double shifts at night (2nd and 3rd). Things are quieter at those times, and that way she can work a 3-day week with 4 days off. On some occasions, if she wants more money to buy stuff for the kids, she can adjust her shift work to suit her financial needs.
So, to answer your question, I think it depends on the person and his/her mindset. It can be considered great, and it can be considered terrible. If it were required, and I didn't like it, I'd think twice about taking the job; otherwise, I'd be happy.
Right now though, I'm not thinking about taking any job. I'm retired. I experimented with retirement jobs, but have finally reached the point (age 66) where I realize it's time to sit on the front porch and watch others go to work. Nor more of that for me. As you get older, your body parts can send you special messages. For example, my hearing is poor, my vision is poor, my physical strength is not what it used to be. Also, my need for money is small, my interest in job stress is nil, and the list of reasons for not working goes on.
Hope the perspective of a senior citizen has helped you see shift work as something that (like most things in life) is pretty much dependent on how you look at it personally. You can allow yourself to have negative thoughts about it and be unhappy, or you can have positive thoughts about it, and be very happy with the knowledge that your mind (a solid one) has allowed you to be happy about something that many find reason to be unhappy about because their minds aren't as solid as yours is.

Hey! I work on third shift. I just recently moved to third shift. I don't feel like the odd man out because there is a lot of people that wanted me to come. There are definitely benefits to working third shift. I work in a casino and I don't get a lot of business. I get paid nearly $10 an hour to stand around and do nothing.

I work second shift, sometimes its hard since my fiance works a normal shift, but we work around it. He'll start dinner so that when I get home we can finish cooking it together and eat together. Sometimes I wish he wasnt falling asleep so much earlier than I do, but its not a big deal. I looove my job, so i dont care what shift I work. Plus, I get to sleep later and stay up later, which I like.
I dont really feel left out tho, cause my freinds and family and I plan things for my days off.

most places offer shift differential for the off shifts... and usually the office management is gone so there is less management induced bullshit... so the offshift is better that way
