Every other generation twins run on my moms side, which means the generation would skip me, but obviously I could still have two eggs release since it runs through my greatgrandmaw, then my mom, right? Well my main question is.. I am on birth control, but if Icould this possiblity of releasing two eggs actually get me pregnant even though I am on birth control? Like could it give me a heavier chance of getting pregnant on bc since there could be more than one that might release?

Here's a few facts from the mother of identical twins:

1. Identical twins are completely random and all pregnancies have a 1 in 250 chance of being identical twins. It's not impacted by family history, age, ethnicity, or fertility drugs.

2. Fraternal twins occur when the female produces two eggs. Researchers believe that there is a "hyperzygozity" gene which is an inherited trait that causes women to produce more than one egg.

3. Since there is a history of fraternal twins in your family you have an increased chance of having twins. This is just an increased chance, not a guarantee which is part of the reason there is the myth about it skiping a generation. This is just a myth.

4. Birth control pills work to prevent your body from releasing eggs. It doesn't matter if you are genetically predisposed to releasing one or two at once. It will work the same. You have the same chance of getting pregnant on birth control as someone without a history of twins in their family.

Hope this helps!

Okay, quick biology lesson first. Faternal twins run through females only, so it doesn't acutally skip generations, it usually only seems that way if it is a male member of the family's children. Since twins run in your family, you DO have a more likely then others chance at releasing 2 eggs, irreguardless of generation.

Birth control, however, works to stop fertilzation. Which means that no matter how many eggs there are, they cannot be fertilized. (Well, 97.9% chance they won't or something simaliar, mattering on the BC).

So, as long as you're taking it correctly, while it IS possible, it's no more possible for you do get pregnant on BC then anyone else.

Identical twins do not run in the family, they are completely random, however faternal twins do run in the family. My grandmother was a twin, mom was a twin, and I was a twin, all faternal of course. So there is no telling whether or not twins will skip generations. I asked my ob the same question about the twin thing and taking the BCP, and she said I didnt need to worry as long as i took the pill correctly there were no increased chances vs only releasing one egg.
