Lots of very good points of view. Thanks for taking the time to give me your answers. My grandmother is full blooded Mayan. I have done alot of research on their culture and history. I am very aware that he hired only Mayan people. Yes the Mayans did some brutal things but they were a very intelligent tribal culture from mathamatics, astronomy, to the calander, and the concept of zero. Apocolypto is about the end of their culture when they were fighting a brutal civil war. I do firmly believe in the freedom of speech and the right to say anything about anyone. I am just afraid this movie is going to give alot of people the wrong view of Mayans.

It's fiction - just a movie.
What is your problem?
Do you really believe your culture and history of it
is realistically portrait in that movie?
Educate yourself better about your people and history!

Freedom of speech man, freedom of speech.
I've never known Mel gibson to distort history. I've known him to always seek out cultures or history and tell the opposite view of what the school books teach.
I haven't seen the movie yet. So I can't answer your question whether its racist or not.
I did see the interview about him and making the movie and I think he really seeked the real Mayan people and he lived with the towns people to make this movie.
I think that its great that the Mayans are finally recognized as a conquering civilization that were intelligent.
I will see the movie and to see if there is any racism or not.

I don't know enough about the subject matter to be able to say if Apocalypto is racist. Mel Gibson can get away with whatever he wants since he's an 'artist' with money to burn. Don't forget that The Passion of the Christ pissed a bunch of people off too. And Braveheart made the British people look like jerks.

I don't think that it's racist. I think Mel tried to present a balanced view. He showed the peaceful village-dwellers and contrasted them to the violent city-dwellers. (I doubt it was that cut-and-dried in real life.) I wish he had time to get into the calendar and the science, but there really was no place for it. I've been studying the Mayan/Aztec calendar for 20 years and I had hopes...the closest was when the prophecy girl said something about the sacred time approaching.
It's a sad thing when people have to get their ideas of history from movies. You can only hope that it will inspire people to do research and find out the truth.

I havn't seen it yet. Mel Gibson has the right because of freedom of speech. I'm not sure about this movie but there are things about my beliefs that are broadcasted in movies that aren't true. You just need to be around to answer the questions people may have when they come up and educated those around you!

I don't understand your anger. It does not seem like is coming from this movie but somewhere else. If you study drama, and all that is possible to dowith it, you will understand the freedom that a person has to create or to add to history. Your people? I thought they were erased. Leave Mel Gibson alone. You can't fight him. Fight someone of your own acquentance.

Why is EVERYTHING nowadays considered raciest if its not dipped in sugar? The Mayans were brutal brutal people and they got wiped out by the Spaniards... blame the Spaniards I guess.

after looking at your details I agree about what you said, they were very intelligent people and you come from a very interesting heritage... i don't think this will give people the wrong idea of them... look at all the movies about the horrible things that the English did through history and most everyone still seems to like them :)

I don't quite understand how he is "thrusting his view or history and [your] culture" on anyone. Last time I checked, no one was forced to watch his movie and, please correct me if I am wrong (I don't keep with the ongoings pf Hollywood celebrities), but I don't think Apocalypto is meant to be a historical reenactment. It looks like pure entertainment.
It seems to me that you are making connections based on personal bias. That's your right, but I don't appreciate you thrusting your views on me :P

Mel is a sick individual and I truly believe he is evil. With all of the money and resources at his disposal to create meaningful art, he decides to once again drench the audience in blood. Other filmakers are taking on subjects like global warming, trans fats, and PETA, but this guy wants us to shell out 9 bucks to watch beheadings? Doesn't he realize that Americans aren't cool with beheadings? I have heard Apocalypto takes onscreen torture and cruelty to another Mel-level. What a dick.

I actually have not seen the movie. But the reason he feels he can say what he wants is because he is rich and famous just like Tom Cruise, they think that because they are rich their opinion is more important and we should all listen to them and believe what they say. After all we are just peons, not nearly as important as them. Mel Gibson has lost his mind.
