The goverment (a Federal Republic) USED to be pretty much a one-party state for many years and democracy was a sham, however during the 90s political pluralism grew dramatically with opposition parties begining to win fair elections in many states and cities. In 2000 with the victory of Fox, the ruling PRI party was defeated for the first time in its history, (71 years).

During the 2006 Presidential elections actually THREE parties had a chance to win the election, Fox's party the conservative PAN, the old corrupt monopoly (liberal) party the PRI and the socialist PRD. In the end the PAN won again in what ALL election observers say was a completely fair and honest (but VERY close) election. So Mexico has arrived at a functioning (even if still somewhat rowdy) democracy.

The "nationality" or race of Mexico is simply "Mexican." About 5-7% of the population are of European race (mostly immigrants, Mennonites and/or Jews), about 5-7% (if that) remain pure aboriginal race but the other 85%+ or so are what up until 20-30 years ago would have been called "meztisos." This was a racist term from the colonial days meaning a person with a mix of Spanish and native blood.

As with any new race, after a period of time, in this case some hundreds of years, the new race ceases to be a "mixed race" and simply becomes a new race of people like the English, Japanese, Russians and so on. This has happened in Mexico and the people here no longer think of themselves as "mixed" but simply as "Mexicans." Probably the only place you will still hear the old racist word "meztiso" used would be up north in the United States where the entire society still suffers from a obsessive-compulsive disorder about labeling people racially.

This is the same with two other offensive and racist terms "hispanic" and "latino." The Mexican race is not and NEVER has been, "hispanic" that is the language we speak down here (Spanish) ONLY! We are not even remotely culturally "hispanic" as our art, cuisine, folklore, music, even our state, city and place names are NOT from Spain or Europe but from our native Mexican heritage. This is also true for the term "Latino." While Mexicans acknowlege being a part of "Latin America" (the parts of America speaking "latin-based" languages instead of "Saxon" (or Germanic) based languages, there is NOTHING about Mexico or Mexicans that is otherwise connected to anything "latin" (except perhaps through the influence of the Roman Catholic Church.....)

The ONLY place you will likely hear these terms used to incorrectly refer to the Mexican people, their culture, heritage etc. would be again, up in the United States, almost never down here in Mexico. Therefore the correct and proper term for the race, heritage, culture and peoples of the "United Mexican States" would be simply - "Mexican."

Mexico has three types of people ethnically. They have "mestizos" who are the decendents of native amerindians and spaniards and other europeans. They are estimated at 60 to 75 % of the population. They have native amerindians(indiginous people of mexico) at 12%. And they have europeans at 9 to 15%. the official language is spanish yet "nahuatl and maya are still spoken!
The government is considered a "federal representative democratic republic".

If you are talking about ethnic makeup/origin of "La Raza" it would probably be Native American and Spanish.
