We are spending Christmas out of town at a cabin this year with a 7, 4, and 3 year old. We need to put up our own tree on Christmas eve and wanted the children to be able to create the ornaments for the tree. I'm already planning on the traditional paper chains but need some fun quick ideas for the rest.

We made reindeer out of old-fashioned wooden clothespins, with a red puff ball for a nose and two googly eyes, and just wrapped the pipe cleaner around the body of the clothespin for the antlers. You can also use mason jar lids and a hammer and nails to punch out patterns that look really pretty when lights shine through them. You should also check at any crafts store (Michaels, etc), because they usually have kits with reasonable prices to make ornaments, and that way all the materials are together and they're easy enough to make.

Strawberry walnuts. Paint some whole walnuts (still in the shell ) with red paint. After that has dried paint some tiny white dots on it to represent the seeds. Cut some leaves out of green felt and glue it to the top along with a little stem made from a green pipe cleaner. You can add a little loop where the stem would be if you want to hang them on the tree.

Another good one is glitter pine cones. Go outside and collect up the prettiest pine cones you can find. Lightly coat the pine cone with glue and sprinkle with glitter. These also look really cute on the tree.

This isn't for the tree, but I made some homemade wrapping paper with my 4 year old twin nephews the other day and they loved it. Either buy Christmas stamp pads or create your own by cutting shapes from sponges. Get some plain tissue paper, white or colored and go to town decorating with the stamps. The children can then use the wrapping paper to wrap their gifts in.

Have fun!

well me and my 4 year old always make little picture frames
u need
foam pieces (different chrismas colors)
scissors
glue
glitter glue
a picture
small ribbon
hole punch (optional)
holiday spirit
creativity

cut the foam into christmasy shapes like for a snowflake you would cut a snowflake shape and then cut the pic down to size like a circle and put it in the center then make a smaller snowflake and glue them together so the pic is secure and let it dry then decorate it with the gitter glue however you want.when completly dry you can make a hole in the top w/scissors or a hole punch then insert the ribbon into the hole and tie it at the top so you can hang it.voila quick ornament/picture frame.you can also do it w/out pictures it still is feastive and fun to make.you can also do them in anyshape for just about any holiday also work as gifts.

hope this helps

How about this one? Take a tube or two of styrofoam cups, Elmer's Glue, eyes, white & black puffs (little white & black balls), pipe cleaners, red markers or water colors (non toxic, of course) and have them make Santa & Snowman ornaments? They're pretty simple to make but the little ones might need assistance. However, the ornaments are really cute and look great on the tree:). My kids love to make them:)

Popsicle reindeer are always cute. Three popsicle sticks each, glue them into a triangle, (Optional- color them brown with markers first) glue on some googly eyes on the top intersections, glue a little red pom-pom nose to the bottom intersection, and (optional) add two nice brown pipe cleaners to the top of the reindeer's head. Tie a festive colored yarn around the top stick.

Now ain't that just the cutest lil' thing you ever did see?

Popcorn and cranberry chains. Don't use any butter or salt on the popcorn that you're going to string - an air popper is probably the easiest. Make extra because you can be sure some will get eaten! :) It's safe for pets too, so you don't need to worry about them.

candy canes, gingerbread house, pine cones with glue and glitter and ribbon to hang them, popcorn string (they will eat more than they will string), Cut out Christmas shapes on Construction paper and let them color them and hang them by sticking a hook through the top or use a hole puncher and string ribbon through it and hang. Play dough and cookie cutters, let the children cut out the shapes then punch a hole through the top and string ribbon to hang.

Use small popsicle sticks to make snowflake ornaments.
Glue them in the form of a star using four of them.
Then decorate them with glitter. I had the kids put glue on them, then we put the snowflakes inside a lunchbag filled with glitter, then they shook it to get them glittery.
Then after dried, I attached a sting to them and they hung them up.
Its messy, but they are pretty!!! ^_^
