Yes...if the child is still in school...the parents can...is it legal? no.
Anyone can call and report the car stolen. They don't have to show ownership in a police report till later...

Think about this carefully. Do you live with your parents? Do they pay for your food, clothes, insurance, and more? Don't you think they have your best interests in mind. I think what you're really talking about is respect and experience... your respect and their experience.
I don't know where you live, but going "away" for a weekend isn't much detail. You may be 18, but trust me, that's only the legal definition of an adult. I'm sure there are other factors in this story. You need to respect your parents and honor their wishes. Sure, you're 18 - but they're always going to be your parents, and they were 18 once too - so I bet they get it. Try talking to them calmly and see what kind of compromise you might work out.
If they don't want you to take the car in their name, then you can't.

The answer is almost always no, because child is over 18 and now legal adult with adult rights, responsibilities. The only way for parents to obtain legal authority would be if they went to court and proved to jury that child was not capable of making own decisions for own well-being. If voted no, parents would regain control. This often happens when child becomes very sick from eating disorder and drug addiction, and would probably die if not under authority of caring adult/family member. I.E., it usually requires a matter of life and death.

At 18 they are legal adults. You can threaten all you want but I doubt the cops will do anything other than charging you with filing a false report. If the car isn't stolen YOU would be the one breaking the law.

i live in tennessee.. lol. If the car is in you name they cant do nothing about it. If you 18+ you can do whatever you want unless you are under your parents house and the car is in there name.. but if you live on your own and the car is in your name go right ahead they cant do nothing. my parents just ask my where am i goin and how long i will be.

Isn't 18 technically an adult? So, I think the answer would be no to your first question.
And for your 2nd question, who's name is the car in? If it's in the parents' name, then I guess there could be a problem.

If they paid for the car then why is it not in their name?If the 18 year old is still living at home under your roof and you are supporting them, they have set rules to live by,however if they chose not to live by your rules, kick them out. That would be ignorant to call the police on them for stealing a car, thats a felony and that will stay with your child for the rest of his/her life and it will effect any employment opportunities not to mention your child will hate you for the rest of thier life for you ruining their ability to make something of themselves.

Nawt unwess they's wetarded ( the child). Seriously, 18 is of legal age and parents lose some of their rights however, if you still have to live in their house and eat their grocerys, etc....then you may just have to follow some rules. Can't have the cake and expect to eat it all to.

No. parental rights are severed in the laws eyes after 18yrs. If the car is'nt titled to them they technicall are driving a stolen vehicle. Who name is on the title? If it's your name you most certainly can claim they stole it. If it's some else's name you'd have to get them to file charges.

I believe the only situation where they would have some power is in a case where the 18 year old has diminished capacity - ie such as being mentally disabled
