Hi there;

First off you should know that win xp (home or pro) is the OS of your computer system. By OS I mean it is the operating system. Without it, your computer is an oversized desk ornament.
Do not delete or try to remove any component of XP until you have back up copies or replacements of the following:
A new copy of XP home or XP Pro
All the drivers for your video card
All the drivers for your sound card
A copy of the current bios for your mother board.
All the drivers for your printer/scanner/fax
All the drivers for your keyboard and your mouse
All the drivers for your hard drives and anything that has been installed such as any media players (software and hardware)
Make dang sure you have all CDs that you will need in order to rebuild the computer operating system for that is what you will be doing once you delete XP from your computer.

If you are having issues with XP, have you tried to roll your system back to the last known good restore point? If not try that first and see if it cleans up any issues you may be having.
If you are having problems because the current version of XP is bootleg then installing over the old one will not cure the problem but may compound any issues in the registry. So you are being smart by wiping the hard drive and starting over with a legit version.
I strongly urge you to get all you need by finding out what hardware components you have and visiting their web sites for the necessary materials you need. Then, if it were my computer, I would ghost a copy of the current installed hard drive onto an external drive. That way I have a complete and bootable image back up on an external drive to reload if anything goes amiss.
Please be careful and do your home work before starting this. There are excellent web sites that you can google for step by step procedures on how to do what you want to do.
Google them first. Good luck friend :)

You might think about installing a nice friendly Linux Distro such as Ubuntu. If you downloaded the CD/DVD, the installer will let you over write your windows partition. Your grandparents could also be assured of not having to worry about viruses, adware, and other stuff that non-computer savy people have to worry about.

Just my $.02

because you're asking, i'm questioning that they can't be that wealthy, so it may mean to burden them with an further cost. Why no longer discover an element time pastime and pay for the countless hydro bill. once you're at it, evaluate how a lot it really is going to cost them to bathe your clothing, purchase your grocery, electrical energy to practice dinner for you, and pay the further cost of having yet another individual interior the abode. do not abuse the kindness of others, tutor them you're grateful to be taking you in, won't be able to arise with the money for a lot?, then make it a aspect of doing issues round the abode like slicing the grass, retaining the abode neat and sparkling and some round the abode accessible jobs. Being a good shopper is a astounding way of exhibiting your appreciation and could prepare you a thanks to handle on your own faster or later. you're fortunate to have someone who loves you sufficient to allow you to percentage their abode with you. Its a win win problem!

Get what? XP?

Are you saying they don't have a legal copy?

If they don't and all you are trying to do is make it legit is buy a copy, then when you reactivate you enter the new registration key.

You don't need to reinstall the program or delete the old one.
