A postal code (known in various countries as a post code, postcode, or ZIP code) is a series of letters and/or digits appended to a postal address for the purpose of sorting mail.

Germany was the world's first country to introduce a postal code system in 1941. The United Kingdom followed in 1959 and the United States in 1963.

In February 2005, 117 of the 190 countries members of the Universal Postal Union had post code systems. Examples of countries that do not are: Ireland (although a national postal code system will be introduced in 2008 [1]), Hong Kong, and Panama.

Although postal codes are usually assigned to geographical areas, sometimes this is not the case: special codes may be assigned to individual addresses or to institutions with large volumes of post, such as government agencies and large commercial companies. One example is the French Cedex

Zip codes are used in the United States, and Postal Codes are used in other areas.. Depends on what site you're trying to sign up for.. If it's asking for a zip, it wants a five digit code (all numbers), not a postal code that may be alpha-numeric.

A postcode is 4 numbers and identifies the area and state you live in. I live in South Australia and our number is 5. All postcodes in this state start with 5. For example ADELAIDE is the capital city and the post code for that is 5000.All the states have a different number to identify them. If I sent a letter to Mr Brown who lived at 23 Smith Street ,Rosalee, Queensland then the postcode would start with a number 4. N.S.W. is number 2. Victoria is number 3 etc. Hope this helps

well being from england:

a post code is basically an area code. Each street has a unique post code. Therefore if the postal service want to see your address they just need ur house number + the post code

eg. HP1 4LQ could be a street post code
