When the whistle blows and a referee signals an extended break in the action, veteran Bears public address announcer Jim Riebandt intones, "There's a time out...."

Then, during a two-second beat of silence, the crowd shouts, "Where?"

"...on the field," Riebandt says.

"Ohhhh!" the crowd responds, as though enlightened.

[...]

Riebandt, 56, an attorney in Arlington Heights during the week, said the gag is rooted in an unrelated tradition.

"The pause was in the script even before I started in 1982," Riebandt said. "It was a cue for the (in-stadium) band. It gave them enough time to lift their instruments so they could start to play as soon as I said the word `field.'"

Recorded music replaced the band not long afterwards, but the cadence of Riebandts' announcement -- the second half of which is redundant, since, I mean, where else is there going to be a time out? In the locker room? In the press box? -- persisted.

Riebandt said he doesn't remember exactly when he first heard the first faint, isolated "Where?...Ohhh" counterpoint, but he puts it sometime in 2000 or 2001.

That's a great tradition. I also like how the Cubs fans throw homerun balls back onto the field if an opponent hits it.

Don't care. Look at how the Saints are playing.
