Hey guys. So, my Media Studies teacher got really mad at the class and decided to stop teaching us this unit (I'm not joking :P) So she assigned this project and no one knows what to do since she won't teach us, but basically no one in the class cares cause almost no one does their work.

But I do :P

So, the project says we write four newspaper articles:

1) Profile - with sensationilistic lead and headline
2) Editorial Colum - with slanted headline
3) Hard News - with accurate headline and common lead
4) Feature - with sensationilistic lead and headline

So, of those terms, I know what a sensationilistic lead and common lead are.

But what's a profile article? Hard News? Feature? I'm not sure exactly what types of news articles those are...so any info would help a lot...cause without knowing what types of articles those are I have noo idea how to write them :P

So yes, any info/definitions of those terms would help a lot. Thanks!

A profile is like a biographical sketch. You want to interview the subject and his or her family, associates, friends and enemies to get a well-balanced picture of the subject.

An editorial column is an opinion piece, meaning you are not even pretending to be objective about the topic; you are giving your solution, your viewpoint. It doesn't mean you can't be balanced and weigh the pros and cons; you can and should do so, but you're not getting out of it without giving your opinion.

Hard news relates something newsworthy, such as a fire, a crime, a council meeting. You don't try to pretty it up with any florid prose or give your opinion. It doesn't mean it has to be dry and dull, just strictly factual.

A feature is about something less timely than hard news. It could, in fact, be a profile. It might be about trends, or something "fluffy." It would include details a hard-news story wouldn't, such as (perhaps) a source's hairstyle or their accent.

Hope that helps. Don't you have a textbook?

Profile article highlights a specific person or event.
Editorial column w/ slanted headline is strictly the editorial writers opinion.
Hard news, w/ accurate headline etc...Basic who, what, when, where and why. Just the facts...
Feature w/sensationalistic lead...Something uncommon to the publication, or out of the ordinary like a Christmas feature, or a Back to School feature, w/ a headline that really grabs the readers attention.

I used to be a journalist, am a writer still, and if your teacher is teaching you in the manner in which you described, you have a very ineffective teacher indeed.....

A profile is a feature story about a person and often focuses on that person's achievements, lifestyle, and outlook on life. It's basically a biography, but in a newspaper.

Hard news is a straight news story that almost always uses the inverted pyramid. Examples of hard-news stories would be a report on a fire that happened last night, a drug bust, an accident, the resignation of a public official, an important vote by a governing body, etc.

A feature story could be a profile, but it can also be about a local band, the latest fashion trends, the local 4-H club, dating, hobbies, etc.

Not much is being taught in Sex Ed class besides Sex is bad, you get pregnant from sex, abstinence is good for you, you get STD's from sex. Sure, some kids might learn about some forms of birth control but they aren't taught how it should be used. They aren't taught what men will say just to get a girl to let him have sex without a condom and vice versa. Like you I find it stupid that many women and men above the age of 18 are still clueless about sex and proper usage of contraceptives. Most of what I know I learned from reading magazines. Cosmo and Glamour Sex and Body-Q&A sections really helps.
