Sweetie, this does not sound stupid, my dad is 59 and he still cannot swallow a pill! I couldn't untill I was 13.
You need to start by cutting the pill in half and putting it as far back on your tounge as you can, then just drink, drink, drink, you can make yourself swallow a pill. You may fail at first, but don't give up. Just try with a new pill.
I wish you the best of luck, I know how troubling this can be.

Normally, I'd give one of my sick and "funny" answers that everyone would hate. But, I believe you need a real answer.
First of all, nobody likes the act of taking pills. You won't choke, and if you take it with water you're less likely to get that "impression" feeling on the back of your esophagus. Also, take one at a time; that'll improve your odds of a smooth swallow.
As far as fear is concerned, getting over it is just a matter of repetition. Some people never get over it, because pills are ...well, not fun to take. Hence, the old insult, "s/he is like a pill." Hard to take or put up with. Time will make enough of your fear go away. One other thing, do not pulverize the pill and mix the powder with water, that could lead to over rapid absorption of the medication (into the bloodstream).
Nowadays, many pharmaceutical companies capitalize on the fact that people hate to swallow pills; they often release a syrup or even a patch form of the medication. That's very common now, and it's not just for children. You might want to ask your doctor to write a script for a different form of the same medication. No doubt it exists. At the very least, you may have to settle for a time release form. Just one scary moment.
Anyway, I wish you the best.

Its not dumb. . . . A LOT of people have this problem, but i'll tell you how i learned!
Have you ever swallowed a very large mouthful of drink, or chugged anything??
Well, if u you have. . . this should be pretty easy. Take a pill (if its big or even if its small and u wanna make it smaller, cut it in half) Put it in your mouth, the farther back the better. Then take your drink and either take a mouthful and swallow all of it in one swallow, or just start chuggin your drink! Now i've been swallowing pills for years now but occasionally it still takes me a few times to get a pill down.

I had this same problem for many years, now I can swallow two or three at the same time. It is all about relaxing your throat and putting the pill near the back of your tongue..You can put the pill in a spoon of applesauce and swallow the applesauce. I used to put pill in a piece of banana and swallow. Drink a whole glass of water after taking the pill.

I learned by swallowing red-hots candies and rolling up pinches of bread into little pills.
You could always chew a bite of food then when you're finished pop in the pill just before you swallow it.
Always ask your doctor or pharmacist if it's okay to crush or split any particular pill. Some are time-released and must dissolve naturally in your stomach for the dose to be delivered properly. Others are coated because they could harm your mouth or throat or just plain taste horrible.

First - it's not stupid - you know you need help and you aren't afraid to ask for it. That's commendable. I worked for a pediatrician for years and taught lots of kids age 4 yrs and up to take pills easily. We had a Wendy's next to our office, and I'd send the parent over to get a small Frosty, then I'd put a little in a spoon, and then bury the pill of capsule in it. I'd then offer that to the kid, who'd promptly swallow it right down. without having any idea they'd just taken a pill. Soon they could just put it in their moth and "chase it" down with ice cream, yogurt, applesauce, pudding, etc. Then they'd graduate to juice, soda, or any liquid. When you think about it, you swallow larger bites of food routinely (corn, peas, etc. often don't even get chewed). You just have to prove to yourself that you can do it. Don't wait until you are sick. Try the ice cream shake with candy until you get the hang of it. Keep trying - you'll get it!

Practice with mini m&m's, then work up to regular sized ones. Just get a gulp of water in your mouth, add the pill, and start swallowing.

If possible, crush them up or let them dissolve into your food or drink. Some people will never be able to take pills easily, because it's hard for them to swallow them.
