You go and fill out a job application and when you hand it in to the receptionist, they tell you they do not need anybody.
Why did they not tell you up front they do not need anyone
instead of wasting your time to fill out the application?
Another incident My brother worked at a hospital,he took
me into personnell and said this is my brother and he would like to apply for a job.I filled the application out.
after handing it in she said the hospital does not hire
members of the same family.
Why didn't she say that up front? She should have came
right out and said I am sorry but it is hospitals policy they
do not hire members of the same family.

Legally if you ask for an application, a place of business has to allow you to fill one out. If not, you can file a claim with the EEOC for discrimination. I wouldn't listen to a secretary, I would ask for a contact number and the name of the individual in charge of hiring. A lot of times ppl say places aren't hiring because they are worried that a person may be applying for their job. Keep your head up and good luck with the job search.

The receptionist doesn't always know if the boss is hiring...it may be her job they want to replace, but anyway, even if someone isnt' technically hiring...you never want to pass up good employee's. If your resume or app has the qualifications they may "make" a job available for you until they can get rid of some dead weight. One thing that looks bad on a app is job hopping. 6 mo. here 3 mo. there...we don't even think about hiring those. If a receptionist told me (after I filled out an app) that they didn't hire relatives I would have asked her " why the hell didn't you tell me that BEFORE I filled out the app" I'd be p*ssed too.

Even though they may not be hiring at the time, you should turn in the application in anyway because it shows that you are interested and they may contact you should an opening come up in the near future.

As far as the receptionist at the hospital is concerned, she probably didn't know that your brother was related to you at the time. Most places of employment will separate blood relatives at different locations.

i know. i hate applying for jobs as most of the receptionists seem to do i on purpose as if to be bitchy. and then when they put your application somehwere though they say they'l hand it in then a few months later you get a call saying 'we've jus found your application' grr! i put my cv online, half the hassle nowadays.

You're right, that IS terribly discourteous and usually I will speak up (not rudely, but firmly) that this information should have been given to me up front.

I would request for them to give me my application back, and as I crumple it into a ball, state, "I may not be employed at this time, but my time is still valuable." Or something to that effect. And take my application with me - not discard it into one of their trashcans.
