Your fan is more than likely not working properly, downloading from the net would not normally overheat a cpu, but a cpu with a bad fan would.

Oh and I have hard drives that work constantly day and night and have been running for years on end without problems, you would only have a problem with a hard drive if you had an inferior brand.

Your CPU might be safe, but don't turn on that computer until you look inside the tower. Be very careful. Check the CPU cooling fan and see if it has a lot of dust on it. If so, get a can of compressed air and a small brush (artist's brush works well). If you don't feel comfortable doing it, have it cleaned at a computer shop.

If the tower is on the floor, air-clean it often. Keeping it just a few inches above the floor will help.

I speak from experience; I had one almost burn up. I could hear the fan slowing down at times. It smelled like something electrical burning. You might need just a new cooling fan. That was my problem, and the CPU was fine. I hope that's all it is with yours.

Take the computer to the vendor and ask him to cool the cpu and replace the gas. The best way you can prevent overheating is by installing additional fans in the cpu.

Great question. My first thought is that you've burned up the processor on the motherboard by working it too hard. It's possible that you've caused damage to the hard drive as another possibility. Hard drives have a maximum speed that they can operate and by pushing it constantly at that maximum speed, a lot of damage can be caused. If I can help, let me know. Larry Radio Shack 01-9590
