You can toss it or, as mentioned try Ebay if it's in mint condition... OORRR, seeing that Christmas is just around the corner, give it to Good Will.
The game being bad for kids? Maybe, maybe not... It's a fantasy game... No different than what we see on TV, or at the theater or whatever... How many used to, and still do, think that Barbie was a great doll... But nobody thought about little girls suddenly having the impression that to look like Barbie is to look perfect... Thus, we hear about these young girls puking themselves to get all bony and frail, even then they say they're still fat, when really, they looked fine before their first Barbie Doll... Barbie, was never meant to be a role model, just a toy, but some people took it the wrong way.
That kind of example goes the same with D&D... Never meant to be taken so seriously... then again, look at exemplary movies and TV show have evolved with some similarities. Kind of makes the game a good thing in a sense.
Anyway, do wht you think best with the game... Your ex-roommate gave the O.K.
If he/she gets upset later when all's done, well that's too bad. He//She should've said otherwise at that time.

Dungeons & Dragons is basically like watching Lord of the Rings. People do not actually do spells and fight demons/devils/dragons. Rather they tell stories to each other about their characters who are doing these things, much like one who writes the script to a movie. Actions undertaken as a "character" are done as a character in a movie, with the exception that in order to succeed in doing something you need to roll dice and see if what your character was trying to do was successful as the rules indicate.
Actually, the vast majority of characters in D&D are good and fight _against_ evil.
But to someone not familiar with the game and roleplaying, it may seem wierd to watch. If D&D wierds you out, just sell the stuff on Ebay. If those books are in good condition people will be willing to pay top dollar for each book. Same with the figures. You can sell this stuff without fear that you are leading anyone to the exorcist. :)
