Yes you can. They are called intercostal muscles and they work to expand and contract as you breathe. You can bruise them, and it's pretty painful. But it will go away. Try cool compresses to the area and use Tylenol or Motrin for the pain.

I have bruised my rib cage before. That is the muscles around the right hand side and my stirnam on a seperat push bike accident. lt will take afew weeks to heal

I did once I coughed so much when I had bronchitis that I bruised my ribs(muscle)

yes you can .but it sounds like you have pneumonia that all so can make your ribs hurt and make it seem like you hurt your ribs
