My parents (in their 70's) moved from Kansas to Raton, NM. You didn't give all of your preferences, but it seems that this could be a good location for you. It is just south of Trinidad, CO on the eastern side of the Rockies. My parents chose it because of a number of factors. The cost of living is low, real estate is reasonable (low to moderate), the climate is very moderate, and this small town is, for the most part, welcoming and has most of the amenities you would want.

On the weather side of things, for a mountain area, it doesn't get terribly cold and the good thing is that precipitation in the form of snow is usually much less than what you experience where you are. On the other hand, it is more desert-like in the summer months due to low precipitation, but not nearly as hot as what you experience. The combination is good for anyone who may suffer from asthma or allergies (like my parents).

It is an area full of exceptional natural wonders. There are mesas (flat-topped mountains) rising up from the praire in the complete southern view from the town and the Bartlett Mesa looming above the town to the north. Here is a web page of photos by one person that gives a really good idea of the nearby geography.

Mount Capulin is an extinct volcano within a short drive to the east.

Eagles Nest is a beautiful lake surrounded by the mountains a short drive west.

There are many large and historic ranches in the area. Some are welcoming of visitors and more of the working type are not (I might say they are fiercely independent of modern society). One which is welcoming is owned by Ted Turner who is loved and hated in the area. One of his praises comes from the reintroduction and nurturing of herds of buffalo.

In short, what I'm saying is that this town offers all the comforts of home in a small town setting. Even more, it offers plenty of opprtunities to explore new things and especially a reason for family to come and visit. Its a well kept secret (and some of the locals prefer it that way).

p.s. An added thought after reviewing my post. Those few who might be "unwelcoming" of outsiders are probably much like some of folks where you are. They are very private and have little patience for city types who haven't a clue about ranch life. From your screen name, I assume you know what I mean and you probably would feel quite at home even when a city person might be baffled at times by this unique American culture. Perhaps different than where you live, these same folks also feel an independence from government. They are patriotic, but have no patience for governmental regulations. An interesting lot.

I just moved back to North Carolina where I went to college in the mountains after a 30 year plus absence and am finding people have come here to live from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and, of course, Florida, where I'm from. Even met one ex-journalist from Wisconsin. Seems the life-style is more rural, climate more mild and the costs, while not cheap, are at least worth it to live here. Area of western North Carolina has been growing since 1960s, but it's taken a spurt here recently. I'm not asking more people to come, that's their choice, but I must say, the roads are more congested than they were 30 years ago.

We decided on Sequim or Port Angeles, WA for the same reasons. Only drawback that we could see was that taxes are a bit high, but that seems to be all of Washington state. Sequim actually gets about the same amount of rainfall as So California.

Currently in San Diego and sick of the lousy people and cost of living here, but I will miss the nice job market. We decided not to wait until retirement age, but to go now while we are young enough to enjoy it.

My in-laws are in Yuma, AZ but it is ungodly hot there in the summer. They usually travel part of the summer, then go back for the winter. "Snowbirds"

Southern Utah is nice too, but good luck getting a drink and EVERYTHING is closed on Sunday! ;-)

I also have a ski domicile on 23 acres, yet its divided into a number of parcels and the domicile itself is barely on a one million acre plot, so my taxes are very low. I stay in NJ yet head up there on the weekends, somewhat the fall and iciness. that's a non violent retreat from the traumatic, crowded section down right here. i've got considered bear, coyote, hummingbirds, deer, snakes, eagles, and so on. on my property - a lot of organic international up there. be at liberty to touch me in case you have added questions.
