The phrase Happy Holidays is more inclusive and encompasses Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and the New Year. If you're talking to someone you don't know it can be better to use this phrase. If you're talking to someone you do know or who obviously celebrates Christmas ( like someone wearing a Santa hat or a catholic priest ) you can probably go for broke and say Merry Christmas. Either way they are both nice sentiments and should not offend anyone.

There are a few reasons that i say Happy Holidays to some people and the number 1 reason is that not every body celebrates Christmas like we do......some people have responded back to me by sayi ng that we don't celebrate Christmas or something like that so i do not want to make anyone feel uncomfortable by wishing them a Merry Christmas so i play it safe by saying Happy Holidays........

Lots of reasons:
• Not everyone celebrates Christmas.
• Other holidays happen at the same time, such as Hannukkah, Yule, Boxing Day, Kwaanzaa, and New Year's, so it's an all-inclusive wish for the whole season.
• People are afraid to offend someone if they don't celebrate Christmas.
