As far as i know, Divx is a codec...When u play an AVi files, it sometimes use DIVX as a codec..codec is like Plug-in tools..
That's why, when you playing Avi files, sometimes you cannot here the sound or can see the pic, because u dont have codec like Divx.

i think avi
is just the file extension for xvid and divx
or, its like a basic setup for the file (avi)
and then the coding for the video(divx..xvid..etc) is made using that structure (avi)
