You can write up the divorce yourself and simply pay the filing fees. And they actually do sell the paperwork at Wal-Mart if you are uncomfortable with writing it yourself. Also, the internet is at your fingertips.
I know of a few people who did it this way.

You go to the clerk's office and pick up the papers to do it yourself. You will still have to pay the filing fee and you will need someone who knows the laws to look over the papers to see if you filled them out correctly, but it is still cheaper than a lawyer.

you better have a co-operative spouse, because if they dont want to cooperate with you, you must get an attorney. try the nolo press books on how to do your own divorce. it can be done without attorneys.

or save some and do it yourself from a book you can find at Walmart.
