NUMBER ONE: Do not buy a supersport bike as your first ride. You WILL get in over your head and become a smear. You have been warned.

NUMBER TWO: Are you under 25? Single? Male? How is your driving record? All of the above with a couple tickets and you're looking at THOUSANDS per year for insurance.

NUMBER THREE: If you start on a less powerful bike, like a Monster 620 or SV650 that you could get used for under $5000, take an MSF course and understand that it will take YEARS to learn how to ride properly, you might get lucky.

Insurance companies aren't naiive. They know EXACTLY what a teenage guy does on a sportbike. At the very least, they have ample evidence that shows how much more likely teens are to wrap a bike around something solid within a month, and any "600" or "1000" or anything with an "R" in the name is almost guaranteed to double your premiums.

Insurance will vary from State to State.
There are factors that will make a difference.

1.Rider's Education usually saves you 10%
Totally recommend it for new riders.
Could save your life !

2.Age of Driver(experience)

3.Model/Year of Bike

4.Points on license/Driving Record.

5.Area where the bike is being registered.

Most importantly be safe no matter what you get.

Hope this helps

I have a 2005 GSXR 600, and live in California (which has the highest insurance rates) and I pay about $720 a year, which equals $60 a month. Could be lower for you depending where you live because when I lived in Ohio it was only $250 a year. I have Progressive.

Be sure and check with an insurance agent before you buy.
My son rides a Yamaha YZF-R-600, 2003 S>E> and the insurance is $3200 a year and he has been riding for 10 years.
Once you go into the Super Sport class expect to pay big big bucks.

I agree with many of the answers above. One thing to remember: ALWAYS shop around for insurance. It's amazing how different the quotes will be! There are some companies that just go by engine size. With them you would pay more for a docile cruiser with 1000cc then you would for a 750RR sport bike. Other companies are the opposite.

When you do get insurance I would recommend you get uninsured motorist coverage on your policy. This also covers hit and runs. A friend of mine who rides told me to get this coverage and I'm glad I did. A minivan hit me and fled the accident scene. Because of this added coverage my insurance paid for all my medical bills.

You're not giving your age or location. I've heard that it can cost up to 12,000 a year up in Canada.

I'm 49 and have a Hayabusa and a TransAlp. I'm paying about $350 a year for the bikes.

This question is impossible to answer since we do not know how old you are, what your drivng record is like, where you live, your marital status, etc. etc. These are all things that the insurance companies take into consideration when quoting insurance. It is also not limited to the things that I listed.

If you buy it outright you can put minimum coverage on it for cheap. However, if its a new bike that you financed the bank will require full coverage. Better bring your anal chastity belt with you when they give you the quote, your gonna need it.
