Quote:
Two misconceptions about Orbison's appearance continue to surface: that he was an albino, and that he wore his trademark dark glasses because he was blind or nearly so. Neither is correct, though his poor vision required him to wear thick corrective lenses. From childhood he suffered from a combination of hyperopia, severe astigmatism, anisometropia, and strabismus.[citation needed] Orbison's trademark sunglasses were a fashion statement arising from an incident early in his career. Orbison had left his regular glasses in an airplane. Due to go onstage in a few minutes and unable to see without corrective lenses, his only other pair of glasses were dark prescription sunglasses.

Roy Orbison Glasses

No, please do the research. Roy Orbison DID NOT do drugs. He wore his prescription sunglasses because he had left his regular eyeglasses on the plane he flew in on before a concert. After wearing his sunglasses, people commented on "what a groovy look" it was. After that, he wore them constantly. ~~ I enjoy Roy Orbison's music and do not want anyone to discredit his reputation.

No eye "problems", (and certainly NO drug issues!) other than that he was very very nearsighted and always did need to wear glasses. The "Wiki" statement is correct; he wore his dark glasses one night because they were all he had with him, and that cool and mysterious look became his lifelong trademark (at least in public ).

Perhaps the fact the lenses were dark also made it less obvious how thick and heavy his eyeglass prescription had to be. Roy wasn't the type of fellow to be "wrapped up in himself", but we know all guys can be a bit vain....

PS...and for the last time, people!!!...enough with the drug-thing!! No, not Everybody was on dope -- and certainly not Orbison.

The story goes that he forgot his regular glasses right before a concert, and because his sunglasses were also prescription, he wore those instead.

When it was discovered how cool he looked, he wore them all the time.

Like most music artists; sex, drugs and rock & roll; they all take their toll on the human body making one stoned-faced or just plain tired. Oh, the magic of wide rimmed sunglasses for putting a band-aid on one's appearance. (no pun intended).

they lied. i was at the rock and roll hall of fame and they actually had a thing on that. the reason is because he had forgot his regular glasses and put those on. something like that and it became sort of like his trade mark. he had really bad eyes. i'm sure he was on drugs though most every one was.
