He had his moments. Lots of detractors, not many supporters. I think he was a good president because I like the ideal of the founding fathers that the federal government should be limited in scope. I think he just has had a lot of bad press because the press had so little to complain about with him (although the financial "panic" he had to deal with put him essentially in the same place as Hoover: see http://www.multied.com/elections/1840.html)

I was alway told i am a direct descendant of Martin Van Buren. My grandmother was Karen Van Buren ( that was her maiden name). She died a Nimrichter, which i have the same last name. Any info will help.

All I know is that He and Andrew Jackson fought over their tied presidency. Other than that, he was a do-nothing.
