The normal, species specific number of chromosomes for humans is 46 total; 23 from your mom and 23 from your father, or 23 pair.

There are, of course, problems during meoisis that may lead to an incorrect number of chromosomes in one or more of the 23 pair. For example, Trisomy 21 is the condition where there are three instead of two chromosomes within the 21st pair. Down's Syndrome is the resulting phenotype.
