They helped the shipping industry profusely. Instead of useing barges, many people begin to use trains.

Also for transporation uses.

Railroads made Chicago the biggest city between the coasts. Chicago began the transportation hub for all the railroad lines that went cross-country. Even today you can see the vast railyards on the south side of Chicago.
