I don't get my hopes up because I'm afraid if I do those same hopes will come crashing down and hit me smack in the face. If I do get my hopes up I feel like I'm setting myself up for disappointment. Is this apathy? And if it isn't...what could it be?

i am pretty sure that you react in such way because you've been burnt once...

You don't give the situation.. so i can't relay give my opinion.

but... i am not much of an optimist so my philosophy is: don't hope and don't get disappointed. IF some thing good happens then so be it if not.. you would have expected it.

though statistics show that optimists live longer....
The choice is yours

Apathy is the lack of emotion, motivation, or enthusiasm. Apathy is a psychological term for a state of indifference — where an individual is unresponsive or "indifferent" to aspects of emotional, social, or physical life. Clinical apathy is considered to be at an elevated level, while a moderate level might be considered depression, and an extreme level could be diagnosed as a dissociative disorder. The physical aspect of apathy associated with physical deterioration, muscle loss, and lack of energy is called lethargy — which has many pathological causes as well.

Apathy can be object-specific — toward a person, activity or environment. It is a common reaction to stress where it manifests as "learned helplessness" and is commonly associated with depression. It can also reflect a non-pathological lack of interest in things one does not consider important.

Certain drugs are known to cause symptoms associated with or leading to apathy. Apathy is also very similar to laziness, and may be an extreme form of it

Not getting ones hope's up is fear of failure,it has nothing to do with apathy, which is the total lack of feeling or emotional response.
The fear is based on the belief that our thoughts will influence the outcome of future events. Some people call it a "Jinxing" or giving it the "bad eye" or other such similar superstition. Of course, the stronger your belief in the superstition the more nervous you are bound to be and consequently more apt to make mistakes, making your fears a self fulfilling prophecy. An American president used to say "There is nothing to fear, but fear itself."

Actually your attitude is pretty much the same as everybody else. I think what you have to be is more realistic and hope more for those things that you feel more certain about. The other thing is to work positively towards making your dreams come true. If you were apathetic you wouldn't be asking this question so I think what you really need to do is change your focus. I hope that makes sense to you.

If you don't care -- that's apathy. What you describe is fear and negative thinking. FDR once said, "You have nothing to fear but fear itself". Go for it!
