Turtles are fairly cheap/easy to keep. First, you will need a large fish aquarium to keep him. Put half water (in like a large bowl) and half land. (rocks from a fish store) Put a couple little plants (fake) in there. For food, that depends. Some will eat the pre-made food. Others, will only eat live goldfish. (this is mean, but true). You can go to any pet shop to get the food. Just keep its area clean and get a water conditioner to take out the chlorine. You should be able to get all of this stuff for easily under $100. Good luck

Oh and demongelding has NO idea what they are talking about. Box turtles are NOT easy to care for. They require special housing, lighting, heating, and they eat a varied diet of insects and fresh vegetables. And "pet store rocks" can scratch the turtle's shell, opening the way to bacterial infections.

Box turtles love space, warmth, humidity, sunshine, and bugs.

Pen should be at least 4'x4' for an adult. Outdoor pens are the best. Avoid walls made of glass or any kind of mesh. If the turtle can see through it, it will try to walk through it.

Keep the temps around 80F with a basking site at about 90F. Offer about 75-80% humidity and plenty of fresh air. Also provide cooler, shady retreats.

Provide good sun-like lighting with what are called UV-B rays. If the bulb does not brag about UV-B it does not do it. (UV-B does not penetrate windows or most plastics, either.)

Try a diet of about 1/3rd bugs, worms, snails, etc., 1/3rd prepared box turtle food, good quality dog food, organ meats, cooked chicken, or cooked eggs and shells, and 1/3rd assorted fruits and vegetables. Add a good sprinkle of powdered reptile vitamins with B13, and some powdered calcium supplements.

You shouldn't keep a wild animal especially if you know nothing about it. Find out first, and then decide if you want to raise it. In many states it against the law to take animals from the wild without a permit.

Box turtles are hibernating right now in much of the U.S. Their basic needs are warmth, exposure to direct sunlight and protection from direct sunlight.
They eat fresh vegetables like tomatoes and lettuce. Mushrooms and some invertebrates like earthworms and slugs. Amble water supply.

Edit-
Just read "demongelding" response. DO NOT do this unless you want to kill the box turtle! Box turtles are terrestrial terrapins, not aquatic turtles. Very different kind of care.

this is a very simple animal to take care of.
simply make a cage by cutting wire mesh about 2' high and forming a circle with it in your yard, leave about a foot or so buried in the ground,as he/she will dig a little bit,dig small hole in ground for water bowl, get a stainless steel bowl and place a rock in the bottom so he/she wont drown, make this bowl even with the ground level in hole.feed the turtle stuff like -worms,grubs,lettuce,bananas,turnips,bugs-you can buy turtle food for it but it is expensive--I have three of them,my little girls love them--if you hold it everyday it will be eating from your hand in no time at all, make sure you move slow when you go to pet the head until he/she gets use to you...

YOU REALLY SHOULD LET IT GO. BUT IF YOU DECIDE TO KEEP IT, THEY LOVE TOMATOES, LETTUCE, RADISHES, CARROTS ECT. PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING YOU WOULD NORMALLY GROW IN A GARDEN. BOX TURTLES DO NOT NEED ALOT OF WATER BUT YOU SHOULD KEEP A DISH IN ITS CAGE WITH IT. TRY USING A SOMEWHAT FLAT DISH FOR THE WATER FOR EASY ACCESS. AN AQUARIUM IS REALLY NOT BIG ENOUGH. YOU SHOULD TRY TO MAKE A CAGE OUTSIDE. THEY DIG THOUGH. SO IT MIGHT BE COMPLICATED TO KEEP OUTSIDE.

Why on earth did you get an animal you know nothing about? How cruel of you to be confining a creature without proper caging.

You should have done research before you brought a living creature home. For it's sake, hurry up and get it in a proper home.
