OK, a few tips:
1. Use AVG anti-virus, it's free and less process intensive IE it won't slow down your PC nearly as much. Also, turn off automated features such as e-mail and internet scanners...just run these every week or so and you should still be quite safe.
2. Much of slow boot-up time and other problems "optimizers" are supposed to solve are best dealt with manually. Download Spybot Search and Destroy (anti-spyware to remove any spyware from the optimizers) and reboot your PC.
After you reboot run Spybot and put it in advanced mode.

Then click on the start-up programs tab. Now press ctrl-alt-delete and look at the processes (% processor used column, 0 to 99 percent).
See the programs that take up the most processor % and uncheck them (make a list of which ones you take off) then reboot your PC. For example AOL, yahoo messenger, AIM, and weather channel logger, and office startup are just few resource hogs that may pop up...if you really want to use these start them up manually.

Now reboot your PC, it should be much faster. If something on your system stops working, just add/check back items on the list you made before until you find the item(s) that make that something work. This will beat almost any optimizer for a performance boost and is far less risky.

Best luck....

It could be a couple of different issues.
First. Did you download the software from macfee? If not you might have a buggie running around your pc.

If the software is legal. Check and see if the program is running a system scan. If macfee is anything like nortons it might be a memory hog. If you have 512mb or less you should upgrade to at less 1gig. WinXP needs close to 512mb to run smooth which leaves next to nothing for other programs and this can slow down your system.

Did you install alot of fonts? To many fonts in your font folder will slow down your system

The only other thing I can say is see what programs are running in the background. Maybe a program is hogging up way to much memory.

Is windows update running in the background?

Best of luck.

If you are looking for antivirus software that works, expect it to slow you down! Its checking every little detail your system is doing! If you have antivirus software that isnt slowing you down, get rid of it because its not doin its job! Last but not least, if 95 percent of the internet users out there had a clue on where viruses come form, they wouldnt need antivirus software! Anyone who thinks ANY antivirus software is going to catch everything is sadly mistaken! The bottom line is stop downloading all that so called free crap and dont share files with total strangers and your PC will stay clean in the first place!

Welcome to the fun world of anti-virus software. Depending on your system specs (ie RAM, CPU type, etc) mcafee will overpower weaker systems, as scans are CPU intensive, and the resident program is fairly memory hungry. Is it possible this is only when it is doing a complete system scan? If you do in fact have an old computer, you have 3 options. Deal with it. Get rid of Mcafee, or explore other alternatives such as Linux :-) <--shameless plug

Because Mcafee and Norton both are poorly wrote applications. They are memory and cpu hogs. Trash them and get Avast or AVG. They are both AS GOOD, are substantially lighter on the ram & cpu, and are FREE.

P.S. Also dump the optimizer programs. They're also crap and loaded with spyware. Get Winpatrol (free) to streamline your registry startups, services, and to monitor for any changes that might happen through malware.

newer antivirus run a ton of processes, so McAfee, Norton AV are becoming over burdening.. There are other lighter AV software, Kapersky, NOD32, but not as well known, and may not be as intuitive to use for newbies.
