The simple answer is the Spanish kingdom (Queen Isabelle) wanted to expand and gather more land. So she commisioned Christopher Columbus to seek out new lands in the name of the Spanish Crown.

Your question isn't completely clear, but I'm going to take a stab. You've probably heard the "flat earth" guff that's entered folklore, but sailors had for ages seen the hulls of ships disappear over the horizon, then the masts, and the ships returning, so a round earth was pretty well established. What wasn't was the Earth's circumference, and the still-revered ancient Greek estimates would have meant that he'd reach the Far East about when he got to the Americas, whereas more "modern" measures would have put the trip at an impractical distance. The idea was trade (not land as elsewhere posted), so the distance was also important on economic grounds.
