I am only half-filipino,born in California and raised in Mississippi..lol.. but that does not mean that I do not want to get in touch with my Filipino side. I speak english, and i took 4 years of Spanish (but forgot all the words... lol). I am going to visit the P.I. for the first time next year, so i want to learn some Tagalog. Not just to learn tagalog for my visit, but i will keep trying to learn it after, too. i am dedicated to become fluent in it.. is there anyway suggestions?

Watch a lot of Filipino movies and TV shows. Ask your parents and Filipino friends to talk to you in Filipino as much as possible. A friend improved her Filipino by reading Tagalog comics aloud. Filipino is really easy to learn, but only if you practice. Many foreigners have lived in the Philippines for decades but never learned the language because they could get by just fine with English. So you'll be fine when you visit actually. If you really want to learn Filipino, you just have to comit to it.

Both English and Filipino are taught here. But there are very few schools which only teach English. Our youngest started this school year as a junior kinder pupil, but she has been accelerated to senior kinder after the second quarter because she's excelled in all 3 subjects. Well those 3 subjects are RR (reading readiness, it's equivalent is English), NR (Number readiness, it's equivalent is Math), and Arabic. They won't be taught Filipino until grade 1, but she is already pretty good in speaking the language. Right now, she can speak 4 languages conversationally. Of course, she can't speak English and Arabic fluently this soon, but for her age she's good. She's 6 btw.

There's a satellite Filipino channel that you can watch like ABS-CBN. Most of the programs are in Tagalog. Watch it for you to familiarize the words as well as the usage.
