my brother and i are having a debate about if its ok he thinks its wrong and i dont . Morally why. And legally why or why not.
I dont think it has anything to do with a boyscout leaders ability to do thier job. He belives that it dosn't make logical since for homosexual males to be appointed as the most fit role models, mentoring young boys into men.

what do you think.?

I don't see how someone's sexual orientation should have the slightest effect on his ability to teach boys survival skills or the golden rule, but many Christians would disagree with me. Christians would argue that homosexuality is a deviant lifestyle that is forbidden by the Bible, and that therefore a homosexual should not be in charge of mentoring young boys. It is hard to convince these people they are wrong since they are not likely to listen to rational reasons why certain Old Testament laws might not be the best way to evaluate a person's mentoring skills. However, there are a few points one could raise:

1. Just because a man is a homosexual doesn't mean he is a pedophile. In fact, there are plenty of heterosexual pedophiles and rapists. Sexual orientation is not an indication of criminal behavior, and if anything, there are more heterosexual men who have been found guilty of pedophilia and child molestation than homosexual men.

2. Even if you think that sodomy is a sin, this does not mean that a homosexual is incapable of teaching morals to young men. There are plenty of people, both gay and straight, who have engaged in and continue to engage in a variety of sins, including lying, adultery (e.g. premarital, extramarital, or postmarital sex) gluttony, sloth, avarice, covetousness, hording of wealth, judgmentalism, and so on, and yet this does not necessarily render this person incapable of moral instruction.

3. There are plenty of other issues upon which to judge a person's fitness to mentor young boys. In addition to a private interview, you could also interview a few personal references and then make your judgment about a candidate's fitness for the position.

4. Finally, it is always wise policy to have more than one adult leader accompanying the troop at all times. This protects not only the boys but the leaders as well. As long as their is sufficient transparency regarding the relationship between leaders and boys, one's personal sexual orientation shouldn't become a problem.

I'm personally two sided on this. My son is in boy scouts and I truly don't know how I would feel if his leader was gay. I guess I would have my doubts but I always go with him to his meetings as well as his outings with the troupe. I think that everyone has a right to do anything they want as long as they don't have a criminal record. And if someone is that worried about it then they should either stay away or become involved with the troupe. It's an easy solution.

I don't think it matters to ask why or why not a gay man can be a scout leader, but rather can he perform his job? If he can perform his job then what difference does him being gay or not make?
