I don't think anything is wrong with them, but people as a whole generally do not seem to like anything that's different, and emo is different.
They also say that the music is crappy, and they need to stop being so depressed all the time, which is pretty stereotypical.

They are the kind of people who need to visually distinguish themselves from the rest. There are other, more creative mediums to show your personality. Also their approach toward life is a bit less productive. These are just my views, and I really have no experience with emos. If I would meet one, I would try to find out more about them, and my view might change. In general I find a person who is visually exposing their "otherness" as an uncreative individual. There are other far more productive ways to expose their differences than by clothing.

These days, it may be just a style of dress, but it evolved from an anti-social mindset resulting from a combination of poor parenting and feelings of societal rejection. Punk is not just music that sounds good (to you). It's rage and the perception of helplessness. It's the burst of a dying star.
Emos are like Vanilla Ice. 'Nuff said.

People will judge anything they don't understand, believing that miss understanding is dislike and justified. I was a hippy and protested the war in Vietnam. People just couldn't understand what we were saying or what we believed.
If you weren't there and into the whole scene and movement, like they weren't, you might just miss it and not really understand.

It goes back to our fear of things we do not know of. As cave men we didn't just go out and eat something that looked completely new. We had to test it, examine it, and make sure it wouldn't rip us limb from limb. As human beings we're naturally scared of things we don't understand; things we are not. We like to be in control, so if something scares us we lash out at it to change so it does not frighten us. When things don't frighten us, they're in our control.
