I had a friend who would say "I love you" quite often whenever she or I had to leave or whatever. I reciprocated the first time, but it's not something I feel comfortable with and was embarassed.

So every once in a while she liked to say it, privately or in public, and I'd usually reply "okay" or "that's nice." Other mutual friends have commented on my reply. Either they mock me, or say that saying it so often and so offhandedly cheapens the phrase and should be reserved for special moments and certain people.

What about you? Do you say I love you to your friends? Family? Strangers on the street?

I have a friend that does the same thing and I say okay, I'll see you tomorrow. It makes you uncomfortable but don't say it back unless you feel it. They say it because they need to feel loved and if you say it once than they will expect it all the time

I have a good mixture of guy and girl friends. And, when I know the friendship is strong, between me and a friend, if it's guy and I know the guy won't get the wrong impression, I say I love you to them. But u can never really tell what someone is thinking when they use that expression. But, I sure that when I say I love you to my friends, in one way or another I mean it. So she might just be saying I love you, friend, or maybe something more. There is not real way of knowing, other than to ask her.

Only say I love you to the people you actually love. Of course I tell my family, but I also have some very close friends that I tell as well. It's not lesbian/gay whatever, it's just that they're like family to me. Of course I don't tell everyone that, just family and those few friends...definitely not strangers on the street.

I tell my husband and my son that I love them. I tell my nephews that I love them. And only a few other people at appropriate times. I'm not that comfortable saying it. I wish I could say it more often. I can't remember the last time I said it to my dad or my grandparents. I'm not sure if I ever told my brothers and sisters. It's something that should be said to them though.

I don't think it cheapens it to say it in such a way because we differentiate on levels and degrees. I mean you tell your mom you love her, but you don't love your mom in the same way you would love a girlfriend.

And, you can love someone and care for them without being in love with them. It all depends on degrees.

But I have never said I love you to a stranger, and I don't plan on it.

I will jokingly tell my friends I love them. I believe we all have the silent understanding of how far one would go for the other.

Your friend may not have been satisfied with a silent understanding, but you were. Talking to your friend about how you truly felt when she would say that she loves you would really help the situation. Many people don't see it as socially acceptable to put themselves in such a vunerable position, and much of that has to do with pride.

I believe your friend deserves a lot of credit for being open and honest with you.
