You can truly know someone at one moment. Think about the concept that are most important to you pick say, ten concepts from religion, to money to ethical issues, but hard core concepts about live, even about death. Know where you stand, then find out where the other person stands. In that since you will know that person based on what's most important to you. That's how you know a person, start by knowing yourself and what's most important to you. Knowing doesn't mean "all knowing". Know the hugh issues, honesty, integrity, sincerity, "the little things" like favorite color, books, food, don't become so important. People also change, so to "know" a person means to keep up with what factors in their lives change their views, how do they grow. How does that growth change their views. Finally, it's not possible to "know" people that don't know themselves. You can't know a person that hasn't laid a foundation for who they are. You can know "fluff", favorite color, day of the week, etc. but in terms of understanding a person those ideas, don't really help. Know yourself first, then try to understand people.

Truly knowing someone is to know them as you see them interact with you and others. We can know someone only for this portion or point in time. Everyone is or should be constantly changing - growing and maturing from life experiences. So, to truly know someone is an adventure...a journey...an unveiling. Find their passion, their purpose and their motivation.

Truly knowing someone would, I think, entail letting go of yourself, venturing beyond the self, daring to let go of oneself, and daring to trust the other. But in this dangerous world truly knowing someone is no longer an appealing prospect. It is one wrought with danger and pain.

Other requirements or ways to truly knowing someone are:

a) To quit thinking from a selfish perspective.
b) To share oneself with the other.
c) To work with them.
d) To suffer with them.
e) To grow with them.
f) To play with them.
g) To love them.

I'm not sure you can. The people I feel I know best are those I knew in my childhood up through highschool. After that I don't trust quite as much.
