Most video's I've seen of them in space it's just black everywhere, even the sun looks smaller.
Here is a video tour of the International Space Station, you'll notice space in the background is as black as it can get.

The astronauts see stars, too, but they see even more stars, and see them more clearly because they don't have the atmosphere to get in the way.

I'm pretty sure that they see the same thing we do. In the day time we see blue because it is the sunlight reflected off the gases in our atmosphere. In the absence of light we see the stars and thats what the astronauts see.

The same thing, but much much much better than from a city, and only somewhat better than from a ship in midocean.
You'd have to be in the dark for at least 30 minutes to dark-adapt though and by that time it's almost dawn already. They have 16 sunrises a day. I bet they keep the lights on all the time and sleep with eye-patches, so it's not as good as it seems.
