Yes, it is illegal to fake a death.

Acting in a play, is one thing. However, if faking death to collect insurance money, or for any other reason, it is illegal.

it depends who you are faking it to.

If you are doing it, and it defrauds a government agency, then it is illegal. Keep in mind, faking it can defraud an agency without you realizing it.

If you fake it to scare your friends, i don't think it's breaking the law.

It is seriously frowned upon. I mean, I had a guy tell me 5 different times at work he had to go to his grandmothers funeral. When I questioned him about it, he changed his story that it was his wife's funeral. That worked about 3 times, then I just gave him the time off, so he could go get drunk.
