Assuming you aren't messing with the mouse or keyboard plugs at all and they are firmly inplace - it could be something else entirely - Like your SYSTEM locking up, not just the mouse and keyboard.
If so, the most general cause of that is viruses or spyware. If that is taken care of, it could be a driver issue.
If the lockup occurs on a regular basis (say, 1/5 times) you can try starting to Safe Mode to see if it happens there. Tap the f8 key right after you start your computer up, select safe mode. Doesn't lock up? Restart and repeat and see if it ever locks up there.
If it doesn't, you know something: That it's either a driver or program that's loading in normal mode. Gives you somewhere else go to with the problem, and further narrow it down.
If it happens too in safe mode, and a virus is out of the question, it could be a hardware issue.

Check to make sure they're completely plugged in. The wires could be loose.
