Modern evangelical Christians (and others) tend to want to think of the soul as some sort of immortal object attached to the body. This is just plain silly. we are iether finite, or infinite. Since I believe God to be eternal and infinite, it would be idolatry to try and claim myself (even a small part of me) as infinite.

the iron age jews through to the communities which give us the hebrew scriptures would not have even understood the question. the concept of Nefesh is what we often take to mean soul, but really means "Life, Self, Being" Certainly the OT does not make any claim towards human beings having an immortal soul. this is mostly a concept of later religious tradition.

this does not mean that some sort of participation in the eternal or infinite is impossible, it just means that trying to split our existential being into two parts (temporal and eternal) is flawed.

by believing that we are biological shells that carry a soul (which may or may not enter a blissfull heavenly existence) is to degrade existential life into nothing more than a springboard into the eternal. a place from which the only point is trying to find the most efficient way into eternity. it strips all life of any intrinsic meaning. By NO ACCOUNTS am I an atheist, however there is a certain value that atheists put on life that most christians do not. often you will see questions posted here "can atheists really find life meaningfull?" and the answer is YES! they SURE CAN!!! -at the expense of finding infinite and eternal concepts meaningless... it is the fundamentalist christian who is most in danger of finding life largely valueless, at the risk of only valuing the eternal. the trick is to value both and to hold them both in ballance.... we may not be able to understand infinity or eternity, but then hey.... how many of us REALLY understand LIFE here and now?

hope you find some of these ramblings helpfull... jmk

The only world that exists is the world your body inhabits. "Soul" is simply a word used to describe something about the body, your mind, counsciousness, individuality, etc.
Anything else is nihalism - it is basing your world view, individuality, soul or whatever you wish to call it, on something that does not exist- nothing. Nihalism, the striving toward nothing, is the natural result of assuming that the soul is seperate from the real world.
"Soul" is that about the real things - your body, your mind, and your will - that make you an individual.

I saw a bumper sticker that read, "("You don't have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body." - C.S. Lewis)"

The search for it is an adventure in itself.
I think the soul is a power of the entire realm of our being. Which could be existing among a system of many Souls which reason using the mind to share concepts, and the mortal reality to reproduce so we can continue in a search for the Absolute attributes of our search for wisdom.

If you are determined to find out what I am referring to, what is which, you could do some in depth study in the Library of Congress online in the theosophy department.

The mind ,body and soul are one unit. Very hard for me to get my head wrapped around. They work in concert with each other. If you, like me were having problem with this concept. STOP!!! you can grow no further till you grasp this concept. Study this, from many sources. You may benefit from watching "The secret". You can see it on line. Would love to hear from you latter in your quest. By the way great question!!!!!!!

Your body is where you reside on this physical plane. Your soul is the part of you that is you for real....your spirit is the life source presently within. Your soul is what exists for eternity. Your body will be transformed to perfection and immortality. Upon physical death the soul departs when Resurrection occurs the two are reunited in perfection to dwell forever.

Your question implies either pure or property dualism. There is no empirical support for " soul " and mechanistically it would not work. Have you ever considered how the immaterial, the putative soul, would interact with the material; body.

hmm lets see.. the body is just a shell, and the soul is the inner core, or our true selves!? if that makes any sense and the mind is another part of ourselves and cannot be compared with the two. so really there are three parts to every human mind, body and soul.

when you die, your physical body is left behind, but your causal body and your soul rise and remain in the air till you are born again(rebirth) and they enter your new body. All your deeds of your past life which have been recorded in your causal body also enter your new form , so your new life is good or bad depending on your deeds in your past life. (karma). This process of rebirth and suffering goes on and on till in some life you find peace, spirituality meditation and enlightenment. Then, when you die, you are not born again. Your soul finally rests in peace with the divine power and you have the power to take care of the people who are your future generations. (moksha) . This is what hindus and buddhists beleive in, so,instead of accumulating wealth and material pleasures, which you leave behind, you need to accumulate good deeds and other things, which will follow you to your next life.
