Christmas isn't Jesus birthday: certainly because the researches exhibit Jesus PUH may be born 12 or 15 years earlier Jesus birthday. Christmas is a pagan fest presented by Romans emperor Kostantino who were switched over to Christianity, yet because the Senate became pagan he tried to blended fests , pagan activities and christian fests.. so we've Christmas..

It is linked by the gifts of the Magi to the Christ child. They brought expensive gifts Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh - and the tradition has ballooned into today's mass market frenzy. Gold of course is a valuable jewelry item, Frankincense is used in temples, and Myrrh was a death item. All were considered worthy of a King.
However - gift giving is an act of love. Receiving it is also an act of love.

Commercialism. I think it began as a way to honor God for giving the world the gift of Jesus Christ. But then, it was blown out of proportion by big business. Good luck.

Christmas is a christian intrepretation of an exisiting "pagan" (non-christian) winter solstice festival of feasting and joy of renewal (New year celebrations) - Symbols such as the lights and trees are translated from "pagan" traditions was the Church attempted to Christianize the population. Mistletoe was a popular gift of good luck, as well as gilded nuts and coins bearing the image of Janus, the God that January was named after. A pig was often sacrificed and became our Christmas Ham.
