Today viruses are responsible for very little. Unfortunately people suspect a virus at the drop of a hat. You have a better chance of accidentally deleting a picture from your computer than actually getting a "computer damaging virus".
As far as you issue goes you need to provide specific details as to what is acting up?
Are you using Internet Explorer, or another browser?
Does your browser suddenly exit?
Do you get a lot of popup ad's at random?
Do web pages load slow?
What kind of computer do you have?
How old is the computer?
Do you download a lot and save to your hard drive?

There can be a virus still. If you want I personally use avast for an anti Virus program.
But I think its more likly to be a spyware issue. I would download Adware SE update it and then run it. I would then delete whatever it says. Also another program that does the same thing is AVG(Also an anti virus program)

Sounds like you probably are having problems with Spyware. *Not the same as Virus or Worms*
If you don't already have a spyware program on your computer, you can download one free. A few examples are: Lavasoft
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button
or Spybot
http://www.safer-networking.org/
Run these at least once per week, depending on how much you use the Internet......your computer should start working better.
Best of luck hun.....have fun cyber-surfing
