Everyone who answers you has good elements that are correct in their responses, but if the War for Southern Independence was lost solely because of overwhelming northern manpower and material, then wouldn't the U.S. have kicked the living crap out of North Vietnam as well?
The answers for the southern defeat goes much deeper than what your previous respondants have stated.
1. Not everyone in the south was that crazy about the idea of succession from the union nor were many southern nationalists, like Edmund Ruffin. Many would not have bore arms against the Union had not the Union invaded the south.
2. Southerners, for the most part, were deeply religious folk who believed that god would support their cause. As the years went by, it became clear that the south was losing and many began to question the righteousness of their struggle.
There are more reasons for the Southern defeat that I will not go into here but can be read about in the book I list as my source.

The Union won based upon advantages in manpower, transportation, manufacturing, finance and naval power.

There are several keys to victory.

The Union naval blockade of southern ports made it extremely difficult for the Confederacy to import needed materiel.

Since most of the war was fought on southern soil the south was deprived of vital manufacturing capacity and food production.

The Union had a huge advantage in manufaturing and transportation giving Union troops better and more abundant supplies.

The South had an unstable monetary system making financing the war difficult.

In 1864 when Grant took over command of all Union forces the north finally had a general that was able to coordinate campaigns in the eastern and western theaters putting additional pressure on an undermanned Confederate armies.

Key battles were the capture of Vicksburg and the victory at Gettysburg almost simultaneously.

Sherman's capture of Atlanta assured Lincoln's reelection in 1864 and was the first step in gutting the south's supply system.

Sherman's march to Savannah and subsequent march through South and North Carolina further exacerbated the south's manufacturing and food production problems. This was done at the same time as Grant's push against Richmond and occupied the majority of southern troop strength preventing the south from shifting troops from one area of conflict to another as they had done with success in the early years of the war.

Your essay is really a book length topic. Try to distill the information down to a managable length.

You have your work cut out for you. I suggest you start by looking at the long string of northern generals.

By the way, the North won the war because they had more men, more factories, and more resources than the South.
