I'd pick UPS or FedEx over USPS as USPS is only able to track a package till it leaves the country; after that, it's up to the recipient's country to track the package and it might be a real headache to track down something that has gone missing.

Take your item, wrap it in bubble-wrap if it is fragile, put it in a box that's not too huge (FedEx and UPS charge more for larger packages) but still has room for you to fill it with tissue paper, shredded newspaper, packing peanuts, or another material to protect it during shipping. Tape it up very well, affix the shipping label, and take it to a Kinko's (FedEx) or UPS Store. They'll make sure it's properly labelled and tell you how much it will cost to get it there. Make sure to ask for delivery confirmation.

that depends on where you live and where it is going. expresspost is very good and reasonable.
