The main shopping strip in my community has Charles Dickens style caroling everyday till about 6pm.
I usually go with a local group through portions of town the weekend before Christmas, a group of about12-20. We have an acoustic guitar to help us stay in tune and one year someone brought a bongo drum. Great fun and it brings so many smiles. I opted out this year though.

We used to go to a friend's annual Caroling party and it was such a good time. Many of the people were good singers and we walked around with a small toy piano, played by this lovely and talented Asian girl to keep us all in tune. Many times it was as
cold as you could imagine but we hung in because the people who opened their doors all enjoyed it so much. Best times was when it showed as we went around house to house. Then, after maybe 2+ hours of singing, we'd all go back inside and party till the wee hours. I miss that, but other priorities prevail.
Hey....Merry Christmas!

I always see people caroling in movies but I didn't know anyone did that in real life. I'm glad no one does it around here. It's freezing cold outside and I would hate standing with my front door wide open waiting for them to finish. I'm not a Grinch or anything but it's something I could do without.

In a way, yes. But here in San Antonio,Texas we call it,"Las Posadas". It's the recreation of Mary and Joseph looking for a place to spend the night. (It's pre-arranged) The couple goes from house to house asking for shelter but are turned away each time. As they walk along,an entourage of singers follows them singing old Mexican songs (carols). And then finally one house welcomes them(the barn) and they all sing more songs celebrating the birth of Christ. THEN everybody gets Mexican pastries and hot Mexican style chocolate, lol.

We did this every year when I was in grade school and jr high. We got out of school for the whole day and went to various local nursing homes and the residents all loved it. That's alot safer than going door to door. I don't know of anyone who does it anymore though.

Neither where I live. I think they used to do it around the 60's but now I don't think anyone does except for really religious people.
