I have narrowed down my holiday plans for a Bank Holiday break in May to two cities - Munich and Vienna. Which do you suggest I visit and why?

Well, I have been to both. But I lived in near Munich for 7 years, so I feel more comfortable talking about that city. Both are beautiful. I found Munich more friendly and if you are interested in social life as well as good shopping and tourists spots, then it takes a lot of beating. Vienna on the other hand, has a history of music, beautiful architecture and also good food.
For a couple of days, I don't know. I tend to go with Munich but I am probably biased. Have fun anyway whichever you choose. You certainly won't make a mistake, they both have good things to offer.

Munich - the people are so friendly, and the pace of life is slow but not sleepy. In addition, I feel that Munich has the best of Germany's food - the wurst (sausages) and beer is top class. It's definitely an interesting city with points of interest and history. The nightlife is also pretty good...if that's a consideration of yours.
In addition, the Alps are accessible - only 2 or 3 hours away by rail I believe.

I've been in both places. Vienna has more history, more to see there, and food is just as good as Munich.

Vienna without no shadow of doubt. You have a lot of wonderful places to see and you can have more much fun.
