I thought it was Elizabeth, but then I saw that the Queen Mother's name was Elizabeth. Are there two Elizabeth's, I'm American, so forgive my ignorance about all of this, but I am trying to get a better understanding of who's who, and why.

You are right. Both mother and daughter were named Elizabeth. The Queen Mother was the wife of King George VI and during his reign, she was known as Queen Elizabeth. After the King died, she assumed the title of The Queen Mother, and became known as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and was no longer referred to as "The Queen".

Their daughter, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, became the current Queen of England when the King died in 1952, and she is known as Queen Elizabeth II.

Yes, I can see how you could find it a bit confusing with two Queen Elizabeths of the same country, alive at the same time. And then there is Queen Elizabeth I who lived from 1533 - 1603, and that can be confusing for some people.

There hasn't been a queen of England for over 300 years. Queen Elizabeth II is queen of the United Kingdom and her surname is Windsor. They changed it from Saxe-Coburg Gotha in 1917 because there was a lot of anti-German feeling during the First World War. King James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne in 1603, creating a single kingdom spanning two countries. In 1707 England and Scotland joined to form a single country and there has been no king or queen of England or Scotland since.

Elizabeth. She was named after the Queen Mother (her mother) who's name was also Elizabeth. Their technical last name is Windsor. She is referred to "Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth". They don't call her Elizabeth Windsor.
